How Mobile shopkeepers scam with you by selling used mobiles with new packaging
There are various scammers who make big money out of scamming the public in a way no one ever figures out. Some of these scammers operate in mobile marketplaces, and they deceive customers either by misleading them by making a huge issue out of a little one in order to make more money, or by selling damaged products that have been temporarily repaired. But there is one more thing that is very commonly practiced by these scammers. They often sell used phones with new packaging in order to give the customer impression that the product they are buying is new and hence they pay the full money.
The shopkeeper uses a sealing machine to seal the phone box and assembles all of the accessories as if they were new. If you are not a professional, you won’t be able to suspect that the phone was used. Scammers who are more skilled will offer fake phones that have the bodies of famous flagship phones but are equipped with low-quality components and software. A fake phone has the same body as the real one, but the software is usually Android-based and appears like the operating system of the phone it is attempting to replicate. Sometimes they come with the box and all the unused accessories.
Reasons of such scam
- To achieve a certain goal level, some shops may open a box-packed phone, connect it to wifi, receive their commission, and then repack the phone. In this case, the vendor will achieve his sales goals, and the phone will be sold later to any customer as if it were brand new. These phones are sometimes offered at a discount.
- Some shopkeepers also do it in order to make more money. Used or even slightly used phones are sold at low rates while box-packed and sealed phones have different prices. Out of greed, some shopkeepers sealed the used phone boxes to charge the price of the new phone. Customers are unaware that they are purchasing a used phone and so pay for it as if it were a new one.
How to prevent yourself from buying a used phone instead of a new one?
- Avoid buyer who is forcing you to buy something. There are valid reasons why an honest seller would want to sell their phone as quickly as possible, but if you are being pressured to buy right away, this could be a red flag.
- Avoid buying phones with extremely low price. Human greed is the major reason frauds operate. People desire something for a lower price. This is why some scammers can sell you a faulty product at low price.
- Check the blacklist. Check the phone’s IMEI number against the blacklist database to ensure it hasn’t been reported as lost or stolen.
- Examine the phone thoroughly. Begin with a visual check, then proceed to component inspection using onboard diagnostics or third-party applications. Never buy a phone that has low battery.
These are all the things you can do to ensure that the phone you are purchasing is new and not faulty. Always make your purchase from a trusted seller.
