Pakistan starts exporting smartphones
Pakistan has made history by exporting 4G mobile phones for the first time, with the first consignment to the United Arab Emirates labeled ‘Made in Pakistan.’ Following the approval from Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA), Inovi Telecom has exported 5,500 4G smartphone devices to the United Arab Emirates with the tag. Inovi Telecom Pvt Ltd was authorized in April to produce and complete its first export order in four months mobile devices.
The PTA congratulated the firm on its significant performance. This is the outcome of joint efforts to enhance the country’s mobile device ecosystem. A conducive environment for mobile device production in Pakistan was created with the effective deployment of the Devise Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) and the enabling of government policies including mobile production policy.
Recently, the telecommunications industry became a major contributor to Pakistan’s economy, as its share in the national exchange rate rose 129% compared with 2019 in 2020 despite economic pressure from Covid-19.
Many mobile brands have also agreed to set up their production houses in Pakistan
Under the MDM Regulations, 2021 released by PTA in January this year, the authorizations have been issued. The leading manufacturing licensing firms include Oppo and Vivo. In two years, the firms will have to finish the deletion program which has already been approved. This means now Vivo and Oppo phones will no be imported anymore which is why they will be cheaper to buy. Moreover, these smartphones which are produced in Pakistan will be exported. This will improve the balance of trade in Pakistan. The international brands which are licensed to produce are planning to export their products to the Middle East.
On the other hand, Samsung has also agreed to set its assembly houses in Pakistan which will assemble Samsung phones. The brands already produced in Pakistan were Tecno, Infinix, Itel, and Realme, while Nokia was commencing operations in September 2021.
